There was a time when storefronts, murals, banners, barn signs, billboards, and street signs were all hand-lettered with brush and paint. In 2010, filmmakers Faythe Levine and Sam Macon began documenting two dozen dedicated sign painters working in cities throughout the United States. The documentary "Sign Painters" is the first anecdotal history of the craft and features stories about these dedicated artists. The film celebrates the American tradition of the hand-painted industry and explores a fascination insight into a highly specialized underground trade, emphasizing an appreciation for a balance between art and commerce.
